"I must balance out the first review. This is an excellent book and CD for anyone interested in Spanish stories for children.
First of all, I have to say I LOVE the Castilian accent (Spanish from Spain is spoken on the CD), and I believe anyone who learns or speaks Spanish has to appreciate all the different varieties of Spanish spoken in the world. Language is alive, and there is never just one way to speak a given language. The differences among Spanish from Spain and the other Spanish-speaking countries are similar to the differences found among British English and all of the other English-speaking countries of the world. The accents and words are sometimes different, but not so much that we can't understand each other with a little patience and familiarity. Lisping certain sounds is the correct way of speaking Spanish in Spain, and it sounds quite elegant once you get used to it, so don't let that be factor in not choosing any of the books in this series. To do so would be to miss out on an outstanding Spanish listening and reading experience.
The CDs that accompany these books are expertly produced. The articulation is clear and the pace slow enough that a non-native speaker or a young child could easily follow along. They would also be perfect for an adult learning Spanish. The stories are voiced by acting professionals who bring the words to life, and there is music and sound effects mixed in, which enhance the readings.
The books are beautifully illustrated, and the pictures show what is happening in the story to help further with understanding for non-native speakers.
These traditional stories will be familiar to English speakers, but they are obviously written in Spanish first, so there are no awkward translations or mistakes. The stories are truly wonderful to read aloud or to listen to with your children. We've done both in my family, and the children love to hear them over and over.
I would highly recommend any of the books in this series for both native and non-native speakers of Spanish alike. You won't be disappointed!"
