- I liked the book, but it didn't really seem to focus specifically on the Young Adult niche. Most of what was in this book was information that's standard for most writing books. The only info that seemed specific to the young adult niche boiled down to
- Make sure the dialog and voice match the age group you're writing to
- Make sure the pace is quicker than adult titles
- Don't roll too many sub-plots into your work
Don't get me wrong, as far as a writing book goes, it was pretty good. I just felt it slightly missed the mark on what is needed for the young adult market specifically. - This one has been sitting on my bookshelf for a while, and I think I might have found it more useful if I'd read it when I first bought it a few years ago. There's certainly useful tidbits throughout, but it's neither a how-to nor a definitive resource on all things young adult fiction. Instead, it's an overview of fiction writing with additional information on what makes writing for young adults different from writing for adults. It's pretty void of details, but the overall concepts the author touches on are critical to success. I found the most useful information in Chapter 9 on theme. Depending on where you find your own writing lacking, you may discover something to help you as well.
Bottom Line
Useful information at a high level, but not much depth. - An invaluable guide to writing YA lit. Regina Brooks runs the high-powered agency Serendipity Lit--and loves YA. I really appreciated her kind, wise, and clear advice. Highly recommended!

- I believe every teacher has something to offer, and this book has some fantastic advice for anyone wanting to write fiction for young adults. It's not as easy as people assume, nor is it like any other age group. It is a unique area all itself and it requires careful navigation to get it right. The advice in Writing Great Books for Young Adults is solid and will be beneficial to anyone that reads the book.
It's laid out in a text book style and goes through each aspect of writing YA fiction, gives advice, and provides examples. The only problem with this book is that it has some dry spots that are hard to stay focused on. However, if you can look past that, you will find a wealth of information about writing for the young adult audience and how to appeal to its thriving market.
This book has great advice and is a must read for anyone wanting to improve their skills or break into young adult fiction.
